The trade mission
This trade mission runs parallel to the working visit of His Majesty King Willem-Alexander to North Rhine-Westphalia on 14 November, in the context of various hydrogen projects. His Majesty the King will be present at some program parts of the trade mission. The trade mission is led by the State Secretary for Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, Hans Vijlbrief. The business mission leader is Theo Henrar, chairman of the sector organization FME. Yvette van Eechoud, Deputy Director-General for Foreign Economic Relations, will also be present.
With a shared border and as natural economic partners, companies and knowledge institutions in NRW and the Netherlands are uniquely positioned to join forces in the energy transition.
NRW is the industrial backbone of Germany and sees the urgency of the hydrogen transition. The state government that took office in 2022 has set the goal of making NRW a climate-neutral industrial location of the future. A quarter of the current CO2 emissions in NRW can be saved by hydrogen alone. This means approximately 70% dependence on hydrogen imports and, in the long term, requires a reliable supply of hydrogen at competitive prices. The state also has a strong manufacturing industry with extensive knowledge of electrolysis and fuel cells.
This offers opportunities for the Netherlands as a production, import and transit hub towards industrial demand clusters in NRW, and last but not least as a partner in technological challenges.
